Mud effects - by Jtec

So god darn simple but will take a few trys to get it the way you want it, im using paint shop pro 7, but can be used the same way in photoshop

First of all think how mud will effect your vehicle in real life (when your splashing around in mud)  Also note that mud has different states on vehicles from light dry - a darker wet

Ok on with the tutorial,

1, Start by creating a layer and name it mud texture.  Place the dirttex.jpg (above) onto the layer and start working it around the areas you want the dirt to be with your clone tool.  Remember this should be areas what are constantly in contact with mud.  Here is a image of the areas i covered on the Samaritan.



Note how ive added splats that are flowing and also peaks of mud.  Gives a great result.

2, Once you are happy with the coverage of the mud texture next is covering the dirt with a darker texture which adds a little more depth into the texture.  Create a new layer and name it dark dirt use the paint brush tool and use the colour R 61 G 54 B 46 ,now paint over the areas where the mud texture is.  Should be something like this.



3, Now on to the lighter dry dirt.  I use the spray can tool for this with 50% opacity 40% hardness and 40% density.  You can play around with these settings till your happy though.  Create a new layer and name it light dirt.  Spray colour R 137 G 132 B 110 above the mud texture/darkdirt till you are happy with the results and they look similar to this. (ive turned the other2 layers up a bit so i can see where i should be spraying the Light dirt)



4, You should now have 3 layers of filth  ;D Now place the layers as follows with layer opacity levels following

Mud detail  25%
Dark dirt  100%
Light dirt  65%

End result should be similar to this
